The Two Primary Pickleball Paddles and Players

The Two Primary Pickleball Paddles and Players

Typically, in the realm of pickleball, players generally fall into one of two primary categories: control-oriented players and power players. A common oversight among many players, particularly novices, is the importance of aligning their paddle with their play style.

So, which type of player are you? And which paddle should you pick?

Let’s commence with an aggressive play style. If you are inclined to play with speed and vigor, you exhibit the tendencies of a power player, best suited to a power paddle. Here is a selection of highly reviewed power paddles:

Power Paddles:

1. Advanced Player: Selkirk LUXX Control Air Invikta - Here is the Amazon link

2. Intermediate Player: Prism Carbon Fiber 16mm - Here is the Amazon link (Plays more like a $250+ dollar paddle)

Conversely, if your strategy revolves around decelerating the game and engaging in a dink battle, a control paddle would be more appropriate. These players often focus on spin and precision.

Control Paddles:

1. Advanced Player: Selkirk Power Air Invikta - Here is the Amazon link

2. Intermediate Player: Selkirk SLK Halo Control - Amazon link  (Though available in a power variant, the control version has garnered more favorable reviews)

A crucial insight regarding pickleball is that you need not adhere strictly to conventional wisdom; an aggressive player need not default to a power paddle, nor must a precision-focused player opt exclusively for a control paddle. Some experts even advocate for selecting the opposite to achieve a balanced gameplay style. However, my advice for beginners is to start with a paddle that complements your natural style. This approach will enhance your enjoyment for the game.

Happy Dinking,

-Patrick
